Adapting products for international markets

During the internationalization process of a product or service, it’s important to know if the product needs to be adapt to an specific market, knowing the different aspects that are involve in this such as culture, customer expectations, weather, competition, in order to see if the market will react in a positive way to the product you are willing to sell in the foreign country.

Products need to be differentiated from competition; this could be accomplished by their composition, origin or tangibles characteristics like packaging or quality. The first aspect that need to be take into account when the company decide to internationalize the product by reaching new markets  refers to the adaptation of the product. There are four options that companies have at the moment they are willing to gain new markets, the first is to sell the product the same way it’s in the international market, second modify the product for each country or region, third design new products for each market and fourth, incorporate all the differences into the design of the product and put it into the global market.

The real dilemma in this process is whether standardize or adapt the marketing strategy of the product in order to reach new markets. The benefits of standardize the product are saves in the cost of production and marketing also economies of scale. But in the other hand, adapting the product to the market will make them take into account other aspect that are not mentioned before such as governmental regulations, this can make a product be adapts in the new market depending the country, different behavior patterns of consumption or local competition.

At the moment to decide how the product will be sell or commercialize in the new market, companies need to take into account three factors  such as the market that the product will be focus on, the product and the characteristics and the characteristics of the company.  This aspects sometimes are not take into account due to the extra cost that are generated to the company in order to adapt the product, but in many cases, companies loose huge amount of money trying to gain new market without realizing, that investing the money adapting the product could be cheaper than loose the money trying to make people buy the product they do not like.

Every product is made to fit the prevailing conditions of the market. Those conditions are related to legal, economic or weather standards of the market. Therefore it’s important to analyze carefully the market environment to see how these affects positively or negatively the adaptation of the product. This conditions are governmental regulations, non tariff barriers; characteristics, preferences and expectation of the customers, culture, economic development, competitive offers, and weather and geography.

Also it’s important to analyze the characteristic of the product where we have the components of the product, brand, packaging, presentation and uses of the product.

Market Environment

Governmental regulations are commonly the most rigorous requirements for a product to reach new markets, most of them are used to protect national industries. In order to success into this process, it’s important to realize that regulations changes as fast as new products come to the market.

Non Tarrif barriers include product standards, test procedures and bureaucratic paper work. These barriers require adjustment of the external elements of the product, such as the use of the language in the label.

Characteristics, preferences and expectation of the customers dictates the changes that are need to adapt the product to fit in the market, this decision could be made by knowing the consumption behavior, tastes, attitudes and tradition of the country or region. These variables affect directly the success or the failure of the introduction of the product in the new market.

Culture reflects the social heritage, political and religious views, and it’s the hardest variable to try to change it. In these cases companies most adapt product to this instead of trying to change minds and behaviors. The language plays a different role in the culture but has the same importance as the other ones. If the name or the message the product want to transfer to the customer is not well translate it, most probably will make it a failure product.

The economic development of the market has a straight influence in the adaptation process due to the importance of the purchasing power of the customers. As the economy of the target country goes, the customer will have more money to expend, demand well and more refined version of them.

Other variables as competitive offers, weather and geography are important to know because it affect how the customer behave, an example of this is how the people who live near the shore behave than the people who leaves in the central part of the country.

Characteristics of the product

Every product offers different characteristics that are perceive by the customer. Depending on the characteristics the product could be a good candidate for standardization or impossible to standardize.  The components of the product are needed to be revised to make sure the target country has no restrictions for those ones.  The brands transmit the image of the product or company are also needed to be revised to make sure that in the target market its transmit the same or better experience that in the natural market, this goes hand by hand with the packaging and presentation of the product.

In order to make a success internationalization process, it’s important to make sure the product fits in the new market by understanding, knowing, and constantly revising the variables that affect it direct or indirectly to make sure the adaptation is the right one.

The Cultural Environment of Global Markets

During our academic life period we study how different factors affect international business, especially how culture can play along with us or jeopardize an international negotiation in another country. Culture helps us understand how people behave in different situation, how they interact with other people and how easily is to approach in a business context. In order to do that, it’s required a high knowledge of the customs successful in other environments different from ours.

After reading many definitions of culture, it can be well define as “The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group[1]”. In this globalize world, our success will highly depend in how much knowledge we have on different cultures and how we can use that information to venture our business into those countries.

There are many ways we can know about culture of foreign countries such as newspapers who constantly inform us, a pen pal friend or network friend or the internet which all the times is giving us information behavior and customs., in other hand is the information provide by people who surround us much of the time, such as teachers, friend or family that has more experience and knowledge. Thanks to the globalization tons and tons of information travels around the world and go through our computers stuffing ourselves of valuable information which can be use as a powerful tools to expand our business geographically.  It important how the geography can affect the culture and behavior of a population, as a perfect example we can name our own country Colombia. People from the shore do not have the same customs than people from interior. Knowing this we can use this information to create a unify system to approach to those markets we try to conquer.

In our context most people think that religion and beliefs are the most important things to know about foreign culture but most of us forget about history, what is behind the society that shapes the human conduct. “One of the first barriers that companies face on the path of internationalization is differences in natural languages. Surprisingly though, language in international business remains an ignored research field[2]”. Language and culture play and important role in international context whether you want to talk with some in a informal context or trying to merchandise a new product in a foreign country. Knowing the language will make thing easier to communicate with the future customers or co works in the new environment. This particularly case can be use in some countries in Europe where there are more than one language such as Switzerland, in this country any multinational enterprises who want to entre in this market will need to make marketing in at least German and French.

Doing an easy exercise, we can see how many different industries exist around the world and how each one is looking every day a strategy to differentiate from others. I’d like to use as an example the food industry, which have to adopt their recopies in every country they want to sale their products. This is a huge challenge because in order to gain customers, is a need to change the original recopies and adapt them to the national culture. As an example we can use Mc Donald’s in India, in this case when the multination food company opened the restaurant in India, they adapted the whole menu to the country needs and customs, such as changing meat for pork. The food industry has to face different cultures and adapt to those new patterns in order to success.

In order to see how culture evolves and adapts depending of the country, it’s important to mention how our compatriots who live in foreign countries adapts they way of living, the food and behaviors to blend into the new host country. It is common to see in New York an arepas stand or in Madrid someone selling bandejas paisas. In contrast of this there are people or countries who do not accept foreign cultures as easy as or neighbors do, this behavior can be call xenophobia.

These expressions of hate or displeasure for new cultures make people life and have wrong moments and memories about an specific country. This can occur in the international business context, where a foreign company gets a bad perception of the country and decide not to invest in new projects or worse take the company to another place.

The world changes every day and the culture evolves in every country each day, changing peoples habits, tastes, living styles, behavior and values.  Therefore is our duty to the study those instantly changes to understand how those changes affects our life, our business and our interaction to this world.

Finally, in order to create good marketing strategies we must know a complete and thorough appreciation of the origins (geography, history, political, economic and social backgrounds) and elements such as (cultural, rituals, symbols, beliefs, and ways of thinking)  of any culture, to focus all the effort in create the right market strategy to conquer the new market.

Why export? What motivates it?

The important of internationalization of a brand or company has proved to be worth it in all the cases and could be the difference between live or die in the market. Internazionalitacion could be understood as the process of selling a product or service in an international market or foreign country. The world is changing, the customer receive information everyday and trends change as fast as you can change your clothes, due to those facts companies should maintain constant search for new markets in order to survive.

During this chapter of the international marketing, we can see and analyze the importance of export, what motivates the company to do it, the export process and many strategies that companies applied in their export process.

There are many motivations that makes a company wants to export or start an internationalization process but in order to be successful in this there are some aspects required, such as the level of commitment from the senior management and all the staff involve. Otherwise this process won’t have the results expected by the company. In the other hand, it’s also important to make a market research; this to make sure company is targeting the right market in the new environment and to find out if the competitors are already serving this market and how it’s done, this to draw the right strategies to conquer this goal.

One of the reasons why companies decide to internationalize or export their goods or services are the need to respond to this globalize world, where every company should start thinking how they can grow sustainably in a more saturated national market or how to be more competitive facing international competition in local market. Due to those reasons and more, we find in the reading, two types of reason to internationalize; these are proactive and reactive reasons.

The proactive reasons represent the stimulus for strategic changing but contrary to these, are the   reactive reasons, which influence the company to respond environmental changes and adjust them by changing their activities.

The main proactive reason for entering an international market is mainly the profit advantage, this means the constantly quest for more incomes but this time looking into other markets. Second is the capacity to produce unique goods, in this sense the company could have a substantial added value to provide to the customer but in this globalize world , where the technology flows so fast, this advantage couldn’t be so long. The exclusive information is another proactive stimulus, this includes information about foreign customers, markets or market opportunities that other companies have not see. This particularly stimulus can be create by the international research made by the company. There are other stimulus such as managerial impulse where the desire, impetus and enthusiasms of the high managers impulse the international process; the taxes benefits and the search of scale economies.

The reactive stimulus, which are important to analyze them but is a stimulus where no company should use to increase competitive or act in this international process.  Many companies react due to the competitive pressure made by other companies in the industry. In this case, the fear of losing part of the share of the market by other company that has being benefit from the international market and the scale of economy make the company react. Another stimulus is the overproduction, in this stimulus companies see the international market as a solution to sell the production that is in stock but most of the time this strategy is only made for the short term, facing the possibility that next time international buyers won’t buy the good because they are looking for long term business relationships. The last stimulus goes by the hand with the next one that is the decrease of domestic’s sales and how the companies see the foreign market as the short term solution for that situation and not a strategic decision. The overcapacity and the proximity to clients and ports are the other stimulus that makes companies starts an internationalization process.

During the export process, the company faces many changes, in order to make does changes something or somebody has to start it. The intervention of this person or thing is call exchange agent. These agents are divided in two groups internal and external. The first one refers to the well formed management which discovers the high value that international markets have and decide to explore them. Also in the internal exchange agents, we can find the second level of exchange agents, where the new managements or new workers influence in the decision to invest in conquer new international markets. On the other hand an internal event such as decreasing of sales could lead to the quest of new markets.
From external exchange agents, we can notice how the arrival of international industries to our home market leads to a substantial increase in the interest of a company to start an international process. Also commerce chambers, governmental agencies and other institutions can make companies start those processes by giving them important information about new opportunities in foreign market. Those agents play an important roll in all internationalizations process that any company would like to start because they provide firsthand information about new markets and show the companies how export benefits them.

When exporting a product or good, we have to know as much as possible about the product/service that we are trying to export, this because in reality not all the products are manage the same way or receive the same treatment during the different stages of production and then exports. A good example of this, is the packaging stage where differ depending on the type con handling the product will have, the characteristics it contain, the specifications of the customers and so on. Also the transportation cost may defer depending on the size or weight of the package, this will affect our cost and finally can make our export less profitable.

In order to make a successful export process or internationalization process, it’s important to take into account the different stages this should take, beginning with the market intelligence or market exploration and ends up with the adaptation of our product to that new market. In the other hand, it is important to analyze and understand the destination countries, culture, markets, competitors and exportation knowledge to can get a successful process.

As a conclusion, we can observe begin and how the different factors inside or outside the company affect in different ways the behavior of a company in the market. It’s also important to remind the important role of a good market research will make the way to success easier for the company or will make them go through the path of failure.

Cultural applications for communicating with Latin American businesses

It is notorious how the Latin American subregion had been seen nowadays as a real important subregion for international business. As a prove of that we can see how this economy has been growing lately, we have a population of  over 550 million people and the GDP exceeds $3 trillion, for anybody who know how to count  that’s not a negligible number. This region is hugely rich in natural resources and off course we count with a big emerge service industries which make it globally competitive. In the other hand, our region has the seventeen of the world’s largest 100 cities and commercial centers that are located in Latin America. Also in the recently years the foreign direct invest has been increasing because of the constantly grow and strengthening of the middle class in the region.

In fact, the only country of the first world who has been exploited this important and increasing market is the U.S, which the most part of his foreign direct investment flows to Latin America than to the middle east or Asia – pacific. We also see that the twenty percent of U.S exports go to Latin America, and how the Latin Americas subregion  provide  twelve of the most importer partners’ for U.S.  It’s important to add that all this has been possible because of the political and fiscal reforms made in the region.
Due to those changes, the continued development of U.S trade with Latin America is promising. Since the government of George bush in 2002 where he was granted a free trade authority, with has the duty to establish a hemispheric trade zone that will economically integrate over 30 countries. In fact Chile was the first country to sign a bilateral trade agreement with the U.S in 2003. Moreover the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) established a free trade zone within the U.S and five Central American countries, in order to liberalize trade and eventually eliminate tariffs in international trade between them.
In the importance of Latin America consumers in the global market is significant. Currently, there are more Spanish speakers than English speakers in the world, 358 to 341 million, respectively. This is just one number to show how important to create better and bigger links with the Latin America subregion. Given this enormous potential for commerce, business men and entrepreneurs from U.S need to approach, negotiate, and create and maintain closer relationships with Latin American professionals whose cultural backgrounds differ from their own.
In order to make successful long term business and personal relationships in this subregion, it’s important to know and understand cultural differences and backgrounds in creating links between people.
With the intention of understanding better the Latin American culture, let’s try to do it through 5 primarily concepts. These concepts are power, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, context and time orientation as defined by Greert Hosfstede (1980) and Edward T. Hall (1959).
The power orientation refers to the manner in which people in culture defer to legitimate authority in familial, societal, and organizational authority structures. Uncertainty Avoidance refers to the extent to which culture relies upon, and expects, information to accomplish a task. Individualism/Collectivism refers to the degree to which a culture or subculture emphasizes the well being of a group over the benefit of an individual. Context, refers to the pattern of physical cues, environmental stimuli and implicit understanding that convey meaning between two members of the same culture, finally Time Orientation refers to a cultures attitudes toward time as distinctive cultural aspects.
In others words the Latin American culture is mostly opposite to U.S culture , a clear example is while the American are monochronistic, because are people who value punctuality, the Latin America people are polychronistic, time is flexible for them. Briefly the Latin American culture is highly relationship oriented, in favor of long deliberations before engaging in business; people usually ask personal questions about family before going deeper in business chat.
In other hand, Latin America culture is consider as a high context culture, where the words interpreted according to the situation and nonverbal factors, also a high masculine cultures where men hold authority.
On the hand, the Latin American culture can be understood and known another point of view who gives us bigger insight into Latin American communication patterns. These concepts are Simpatia (kindness) which is a cultural norm which requires individuals to be friendly, even if there are strong conflicts between two people. The other one is Confianza (trust) refers to the importance of having a personal relationship between interactants and typically implies the expectation of mutual interpersonal reciprocity. The other two concepts are Respeto (respect) and Personalismo (interpersonal warmth), the respect refers to the expectation that people should be treated with dignity and interpersonal warmth refers to the degree of warmth of a personal relationship. Different from other cultures, here it’s grounded on the based that people are worth more than material possessions.
Understanding the concepts mentioned before can be useful to anyone who decides or want to make a successfully approach to Latin American society. Somehow, these cultural aspects seem a little bit odd to Anglo Saxon society, who makes things quite different from us.  A great example could be delivering “bad new” letter, where accordance with Latin American culture will highly differ from the normal standards in U.S society.
Generally this letter will have four basic parts, the buffer, reason for decision, presentation of bad news and Alternative/Goodwill but in Latin American context will be really ineffective because it does not take account some of the most important values and concepts of this culture such as simpatia, personalismo, confianza and respeto.  In this case the letter should be like this: first greeting to reader; expression of goodwill for family and associates, reasons for decision, alternatives and future action and finally the reiterated goodwill.
The differences between each letter are enormous for a cultural well known person but in this case, let’s pointed out, in the second model personalismo (interpersonal warmth) is exhibit by relaying formal and polite greetings, different from the US model where the greeting are minimize. This model is trying to build confianza (trust) by expressing goodwill to the reader’s family, opposite to the other model where this is not used. The Latin American model try to protects the readers feeling of potential embarrassment by avoiding a clear statement of bad news, something that is not use or required as a social standard in U.S. finally the at the end of the letter its maintains the relational confianza by reiterating personal goodwill at the end.  These little changes are needed in order to not affect the link between the people affect or between company and employee.
In other to create business or personal relationship in Latin America, you may know these kinds of social convections to avoid troubles and misunderstandings. As a suggestion when trying to make initial contact, you may offer polite self introduction, when refer to an unknown or older person refers as Señor o Señora, avoid first name in early contact. It’s also important to show respect and knowledge of cultures, in this case you may use at least some of reader’s language; show interest in reader’s country. Something that is highly value from Latin American people is inquiring about family; communicate frequently; visit country or offer to host. In the case its need to deliver bad news, it’s highly recommended to present new implicitly and with high regards for readers feeling and reputation. By the way in personal chat, it’s important to frequently use pronouns, express formal, yet personal, goodwill for family and friends.
Talking about business culture, it may result important to know, legal attention should be given to any contractual implications before correspondence is finalized. People are open mind  but in Latin American different from Asia, everything should be written, as layers says “what is not written doesn’t exist” .
As a conclusion, it’s important to understand and know how importance is the culture to create long term business relationships and how to communicate properly and effective in this high context environment.
